Officer Commanding 'B' Sqn,
Capt Shawn Thirlwell CD.
Message from OC 'B' Sqn.

OC’s Address…

As the world around us changes so does our regiment. To meet the new threat we adapt our doctrine. Over the last couple of years we re-rolled from a tank squadron to a recce squadron. With the end of the Cold War, came the reduction of the use of tanks. This is to say that more of the focus of the military is to information fighting rather than direct “war” fighting. The need, and therefore our roll, is in the gathering of intelligence and the security of military / civilian resources.

With the continual change in world events, our (SALH) change is focused within two areas….. Developing Recce skills and Operating in the “complex” environment.

As we open our minds and embrace these new skills, we must let go of old (and more comfortable) soldier skills in order to succeed in the current missions given us and look to the future requirements.

Reconnaissance has many more tasks within it’s roll that Tanks did not. These tasks cover all spectrums. And though it can be complex and difficult to gain all required knowledge, I like to think on the following four points that will get a recce soldier through most tasks within most operating environments:

1. Communications
2. Protection
3. ROEs
4. IRs

Always maintain your communications; it is the main weapon of a recce soldier. Protection is the key to your survival, your crew’s survival and your patrol’s survival; maintain it at ALL times. Remember and ACT on your Rules Of Engagement; these tell you what you can and can not do, and will help you to keep a situation under YOUR control. Know and understand WHAT Information Requirements you are looking for; and always remember a recce soldier’s fundamental skill is always the gathering of any and all information.

Armoured Reconnaissance is the most diverse branch or the Armed Forces and employs the greatest “mission command”. Our flexibility to take on any task and the ability of any level within the chain of command to execute this tasks makes Recce the most challenging and rewarding job in the Canadian Armed Forces.

I look forward to our soldiers picking up the gauntlet and answering this challenge as they have always done and as they always will!

Semper Alacer….

Shawn Thirlwell, CD Capt OC B Sqn SALH
