Amalgamation Of the 19th Alberta Dragoons. Project

Project Manager: Capt. Colin Michaud

Scheduled completion date: October 31st 2006

Event success factor: To Formalize the amalamation of the Dragoons into the SALH.

Project Update, September. 22nd, 2006

An amalgamation is akin to a marriage and the history of the South Alberta Light Horse is made up of many such occurrences. As part of the 100th Anniversary of the Regiment, the pursuit of the formal amalgamation of the 19th Alberta Dragoons (19AD) was initiated. Placed on the supplementary order of battle in 1964, the Dragoons were scheduled to be struck completely off the order of battle if no unit was identified to carry on this proud lineage.

Due to the historic ties between the predecessor units of the SALH with the 19th Alberta Dragoons, the amalgamation of the 19th AD is a natural fit for our Regiment and serves to compliment our desire to be recognized as “Alberta’s armoured regiment.”

In early 2005, submissions were made to the Department of History and Heritage through the chain of command and a decision was made to recognize this intent with the inclusion of the history of the 19th Alberta Dragoons in the Regimental history and display at the Provincial Museum. Currently, the proposal has been signed off by the Chief of Land Staff and it has been reportedly approved at the Ministerial level. The Regiment is awaiting final authority and intends on marking this auspicious event with an appropriate event once final approval is granted.
