FAQ

Q: What is the SALH?

A: The South Alberta Light Horse ( The "Light Horsemen" ) is a reserve reconnaissance unit in the Canadian Army. We provide close reconnaissance and surveillance to higher formations and are truly the eyes and ears of the army on the battlefield.

We are the lead elements in the attack and are often far forward of our own lines or well behind enemy lines feeding information back to allow commanders to know instantly and accurately the current state of the enemy.

We are trained to use some of the most sophisticated electronics the army has and to employ it under any weather condition and under the very noses of the enemy.

The SALH are highly motivated troops able to work independently and trained to use initiative and daring to accomplish their mission.

Q: Does the SALH employ both Women and Men?

A: Indeed we do. There is no discrimination between men and women in the Light Horse.

The main success factor for our troops is their motivation and dedication and neither of those traits are limited by the soldier's gender.

As a integrated unit operating in the field under very adverse conditions, we treat all soldiers absolutely equally; if there was ever a situation where gender was an absolute non issue this is it. We do not care if you are man or woman, we care that you are eager, motivated and dedicated to accomplish the mission.

We have an absolute ZERO policy for any kind of harassment as it destroys the fabric of the unit and thus cases of harassment are dealt with quickly and aggressively.

If you are not mature enough to work alongside either sex in a team environment under adverse conditions and under complete equality then best you find another unit to join.

The SALH treats all soldiers the same. Simple as that, if you want equality you will not find a better environment then the South Alberta Light Horse.

Q: What are the minimum requirements to join?

A: A Canadian citizen or landed immigrant

Complete Grade 10 education

16 years of age

No legal obligations (ie not under investigation or have any outstanding criminal proceedings )

Those are the minimum for sure, but honestly, if you are not ready to commit to something bigger then just personal glory then the SALH is likely not for you.

You should be eager too, motivated and be ready to be challenged both mentally and physically. This does not mean you have to be an olympic athlete, far from it. Rather you must be able to endure the outdoor environment and be in good enough shape to do the physical tasks of going on long distance patrols, be able to setup and tear down encampments, and perform maintenance on armoured vehicles.
